There is a widening gap between scientific knowledge and the practice of alcohol and drug abuse treatment in community-based settings. This report recommends strategies that federal and state agencies could employ to help facilitate the transportation of evidence-based treatment innovations into the real world. It also discusses various influences that can prevent effective translation of research into practice.

Treating nicotine dependence in the substance abuse treatment setting should be a serious consideration for treatment providers because smoking increases clients’ risk for smoking-related mortality, is associated with economic costs, and has a negative impact on clients’ abstinence from their illicit drugs of choice.
